Illinois Association of the Deaf
This organization was established in 1877 and incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Illinois. The programs, services, events and new activities sponsored by I.A.D. continue to attract more new members everyday. A growing number of people joining this organization are proof that I.A.D. is truly meeting the needs in the community.
Mission Statement
IAD strives to promote advancement of the social, educational, and economic well-being of the deaf and hard of hearing citizens of Illinois.
 
The Vision: IAD advocates for equality, full communication access, and cultural preservation of the deaf and hard of hearing people in Illinois.

What are the Goals of IAD?
The primary goal of I.A.D. is to provide activities in the general community that are available and accessible to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population, as well as the general public. I.A.D. supports special services such as sign language interpreters, to break down the barriers of activities in society, so that Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals are welcome to participate. I.A.D. stands by the idea that Deaf and Hard of Hearing people can participate, with great success in all community activities.

ADVOCACY
Communication Access Fund for Licensed Professionals = IAD shall advocate for the establishment of a Communication Access Fund within two different licensed professional gropus; doctors & lawyers, funded by their license fees.
 
ADVOCACY
ASL Recognized in Language = IAD shall establish a committee to push for state recognition of American Sign Language (ASL) as a language.
 
ADVOCACY
ASL Teacher Hiring = If American Sign Language is recognized as a language in the State of Illinois, the IAD shall advocate  for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and high education institutions to make an effort to hire deaf teachers to teach American Sign Language.

 

OUTREACH
Partnership of Events = IAD shall set up at least six (6) outreach events to create partnerships with local deaf and hard of hearing organizations to recruit individuals and organizations for membership and to share resources among organizations.

 

ADVOCACY
Director of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services = IAD shall advocate for the filling of the now vacant position of Director of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services within the Illinois Division of Mental Health.

 

ADVOCACY
Substance Abuse Prevention = IAD shall advocate for an increase in funding to the Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program in Illinois for deaf and hard of hearing people.
Management:
The I.A.D. is managed by the officers (that are elected at the Biennial Conference), the chapter representatives and affiliated non-profits/for-profits organizations. All officers, chapter representatives, affiliated non-profits/for-profits organizations serve without pay.  I.A.D., a non-profit association, is supported by membership dues and contributions
